The Spring Equinox Is a Time of Renewal and New Beginnings Here's how to celebrate the first day of spring, based on your star sign. By Lisa Stardust Mar 17, 2021 GETTY When you wake up on the morning of March 20, you might find yourself feeling a little bit lighter. A certain spring in your step, so to speak. That’s because Saturday, March 20 is the official start of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere, which begins when the sun rises at 5:37 AM. The spring (or vernal) equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator line and moves north. The equinox only occurs twice in a year—in March to mark the beginning of spring, and in September for autumn (the reverse is true in the Southern Hemisphere).
